This project is a key component of the European Commission's ISOS (In-Space Operations and Services) program, which aims to conduct a pilot mission by 2030 to develop a European infrastructure for space operations and services.

Valued at 12 million euros, the EROSS SC (European Robotic Orbital Support Services - Servicing Component) contract covers the development of one of two spacecraft capable of executing Europe's first demonstration mission for automated rendezvous and robotics in space.

This mission, coordinated by Thales Alenia Space in France, will validate the technologies required for future robotic on-orbit support operations, such as rendezvous, capture, docking, refueling, and satellite payload exchange.

This spacecraft will subsequently be integrated with other ISOS program components for the pilot mission scheduled for 2030. It will perform a pre-operational mission involving the capture of an end-of-life satellite to carry out a controlled atmospheric re-entry, preventing it from becoming space debris.

The other spacecraft, 'SCOPE', which is also capable of testing automated rendezvous and robotic operations directly in space, has been awarded to Leonardo, with the participation of Thales Alenia Space in Italy.
