In commodities, Brent crude gained 15.7% to $107.23 a barrel, and WTI crude climbed 14.1% to $103.72 a barrel. The European benchmark price for natural gas, the Dutch futures contract TTF, was up 14.3% to 61 euros a megawatt hour.
The German 10-year Bund yield climbed by 4 basis points to 2.899% from 2.861%, and the yield on the 10-year U.S. Treasury rose by 6 basis points to 4.194% from 4.133%. Bond prices and yields move in opposite directions.
Stocks in Asia were down as Japan's Nikkei 225 index fell 5.2%, and Hong Kong's Hang Seng declined 1.4%. China's benchmark Shanghai Composite dropped 0.7%.
