In commodities, Brent crude gained 4.2% to $104.41 a barrel, and WTI crude climbed 4.4% to $97.65 a barrel. The European benchmark price for natural gas, the Dutch futures contract TTF, was up 3% to 52.4 euros a megawatt hour.
The German 10-year Bund yield declined by 1 basis point to 2.937% from 2.949%, and the yield on the 10-year U.S. Treasury climbed by 1 basis point to 4.236% from 4.224%. Bond prices and yields move in opposite directions.
Stocks in Asia were mixed as Japan's Nikkei 225 index declined 0.1%, whereas Hong Kong's Hang Seng gained 0.1%. China's benchmark Shanghai Composite declined 0.9%.
