"Sinners" stormed into the Oscars race on Thursday with the most Academy Award nominations of any film this year, landing a record 16 nods.

MARC MALKIN: "Ryan Coogler, an original movie, a horror movie, 16 nominations. I think that's a big day in Hollywood."

That record haul sets up the Segregation-era vampire thriller starring Michael B. Jordan as the frontrunner heading into the Oscars on March 15.

The previous record for most nominations in a single year was 14.

In a surprising turn, Variety's senior culture and events editor Marc Malkin says the Wicked sequel was snubbed:

MARC MALKIN: "One of the big standouts today, sadly, is that 'Wicked' got no nominations, 'Wicked: For Good' - the second part of the two part 'Wicked' movies--got nothing. Ariana Grande, a lot of people thought she was definitely going to get in there for supporting actress. Nothing. No song, no movie, no directing, no acting nominations. I think it's a sad day for 'Wicked'".

"Sinners" will face off against other contenders like "One Battle After Another," "Frankenstein," "Hamnet," and "Marty Supreme" for the coveted best picture prize.

In the best actress category, Jessie Buckley is nominated for "Hamnet" alongside some big Hollywood names.

MARC MALKIN: "But I think in the lead actress category, we're going to see Jessie Buckley take it. It is Jessie Buckley's to win for "Hamnet.""

Comedian Conan O'Brien is set to host for the second straight year.
