BERLIN (dpa-AFX) - The German Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA) expects around 693,000 new pure electric cars (BEVs) to be registered in the coming year. According to the association, this would be around 30 percent more than are expected to be registered in 2025 as a whole. The "Rheinische Post" newspaper had previously reported on this.

Including other alternative drive systems such as plug-in hybrids, the VDA estimates that there will be just under one million new registrations of vehicles with electrically assisted drive systems. The number of new plug-in hybrids, on the other hand, is expected to decline slightly: by five percent to 286,000 new vehicles.

Prerequisite: Private demand for electric cars

In terms of pure battery cars, the VDA's forecast is slightly below that of the International Motor Manufacturers Association, which considers around 740,000 new BEVs possible in the coming year – provided that the demand for private electric cars announced by the German government materializes. The VDA also makes this a condition for its own estimates.

For the overall market, however, the industry association sees little recovery. Across all drive types, the VDA considers a total of 2.9 million new passenger car registrations possible for the coming year. That would be around 2 percent more than this year. However, these figures are still a long way off the previous record year of 2019, before the pandemic. At that time, almost 20 percent more new cars were registered than the forecast for 2026./maa/DP/zb
