WOLFSBURG (dpa-AFX) - Regular works council elections are beginning today at Europe's largest automaker, Volkswagen, in Wolfsburg and other locations. The IG Metall union, led by General Works Council Chairwoman Daniela Cavallo, aims to defend its leadership role. In the last election in 2022, the IG Metall list secured 85.5 percent of the vote in Wolfsburg.

In Wolfsburg, six lists and one individual candidate are competing for the 67 seats on the works council this time. More than 60,000 people working at VW's largest site are called to vote - nearly half of the 130,000 VW employees in Germany. They can cast their ballots until Friday. Counting will only take place after that.

Employees at most other VW locations in Germany are also called to vote this week. Chemnitz and Hanover already held their elections last week./fjo/DP/zb
