Westport Fuel Systems Inc. has announced a new proprietary compressed natural gas (CNG) solution for its HPDI? engines, which is expected to significantly enhance the performance and affordability of heavy-duty natural gas trucks. This innovative solution aims to expand the market for HPDI by offering a viable alternative to diesel, with the potential to reduce or eliminate greenhouse gas emissions.
The CNG solution leverages advanced high-pressure storage technology and is designed to deliver diesel-like performance at a lower total cost of ownership. Field testing is expected to begin in 2026, with commercialization to follow. This development is part of Westport's joint venture with the Volvo Group, known as Cespira, and is expected to benefit fleet operators by providing a competitive edge in terms of cost, emissions reduction, and market adaptability.
