The airline allocates one aircraft to its ninth base which will support the launch of nine new routes in March 2026

Wizz Air, Romania's largest airline, today has announced the reopening of its base in Târgu Mureș. With the allocation of one state-of-the-art Airbus A320neo aircraft, the airline will operate a total of 39 aircraft during winter in Romania. Wizz Air now offers 10 routes to eight countries from Târgu Mureș "Transylvania" International Airport. The airline continues to offer more affordable travel options, meeting the growing demand for budget-friendly flights, with tickets already available online on Wizz Air's official website and through its mobile app from as low as RON 79*.

Târgu Mureș was the first airport that Wizz Air ever operated from in Romania, with the inaugural flight in 2006. Now, more than 19 years later and with a consolidated position in Romania, the airline is pleased to make another step forward in expanding its operations even further. The new allocated aircraft will enhance connectivity from the city by enabling the launch of nine routes. Starting from 29th of March 2026, passengers can fly from Târgu Mureș to Brussels Charleroi (Belgium), Larnaca (Cyprus), Paris Beauvais (France), Dortmund and Memmingen (Germany), Milan Bergamo and Rome Fiumicino (Italy), Basel (Switzerland), as well as London Luton (UK), in addition to the current Budapest connection.

Since the start of its Romanian operations in 2006, Wizz Air has steadily increased its investment in Romania, recognizing the country as a pivotal market. Currently, the airline operates 219 routes from 13 Romanian airports, connecting passengers to 82 destinations across 27 countries. Over the past 19 years, Wizz Air has established nine operational bases in Bucharest Băneasa, Bucharest Otopeni, Cluj-Napoca, Craiova, Iași, Sibiu, Suceava, Timișoara and now the brand-new Târgu Mureș. The airline employs more than 1,600 people in Romania.

Speaking at a press conference, András Radó, Heas of Communications at Wizz Air, said: "Reopening our base in Târgu Mureș is a proud moment for Wizz Air, especially as this was the first airport we operated from in Romania back in 2006. Nearly two decades later, we are returning with renewed commitment by allocating a modern Airbus A320neo aircraft, launching nine new routes, and offering 10 connections in total. Romania remains a key market for us, with 43 announced aircraft operating within the country and an ever-evolving network. The continued local investment reflects our dedication to providing more affordable, reliable travel options and strengthening the region's connectivity."

Csibi Attila-Zoltán, Vice President of the Mureș County Council, stated: "The strong return of Wizz Air is a landmark moment: we are reconnecting to Europe, but this is only the beginning. It is the first major step. Our mission is to turn this advantage into a lasting gain. Today's announcement does not close a chapter-it opens an ambitious one! From now on, the question is no longer whether air traffic will resume, but whether Târgu Mureș Airport will manage to shape the future of the region itself."

Peti András, Director of Târgu Mureș "Transylvania" International Airport, added: "Stationing a based aircraft requires the highest professional and safety standards. The challenge was significant, yet our team delivered: we prepared through personnel development, technological upgrades, and the strengthening of security systems."
