Finnish construction giant YIT has commenced work on the Western Helsinki Light Rail project as part of the Helsinki Infrastructure Program, according to a press release. The initial order is valued at approximately 12 million euro and will be recognized in the second-quarter order book.
YIT's total share of the project is expected to reach around 62 million euro as subsequent sub-contracts are commissioned during 2026 and 2027.
The project encompasses the construction and reconstruction of the light rail network, the modernization of existing infrastructure, and the renewal of municipal engineering. The new Line 14 is slated for commissioning in the early 2030s, connecting Kannelmäki with central Helsinki.
YIT is part of a consortium alongside NRC Group, Sitowise, and Sweco. The mandate covers both design and construction, with design services accounting for approximately 10 percent of the scope.
The construction phase is split between YIT and NRC Group.
