Unions are calling on employees at Zara stores in seven European countries to strike on Black Friday, a crucial sales day for the fast-fashion chain, according to the European Works Council of Inditex, Zara's parent company, on Friday.

The Spanish union CCOO is coordinating the November 28 strike with unions from Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg, and Portugal, demanding that Inditex share more of its profits with workers in its stores and logistics centers.

Rosa Galán, CCOO representative at Inditex, told Reuters that Inditex previously had a profit-sharing plan, but it was scrapped after the pandemic.

"We are once again demanding that a company with enormous profits, which are the result of the work of its entire staff, distributes those profits fairly," Galán said.

"We are once again demanding that a company with massive profits, which are the result of employees' work, implements a fair profit distribution," she emphasized.

Inditex did not respond to a request for comment.

Inditex has experienced strong sales growth in the years following the end of the coronavirus pandemic, with its shares doubling in value since November 2022.

Black Friday--the last Friday in November--and the surrounding weeks represent a key sales period that retailers use to attract shoppers, offer discounts, and clear out old inventory before introducing new holiday collections.
