Crypto company B Treasury Capital, or BTC AB, is set to become the first listed investment firm on Swedish exchanges to focus exclusively on the cryptocurrency bitcoin.
BTC AB's strategy is straightforward: by continuously issuing new shares, the company aims to acquire as many bitcoins as possible as quickly as possible.
On Tuesday, BTC AB entered the public trading environment, and its debut appears to be a resounding success. The stock surged over 100 percent on Spotlight within the first hour of trading.
The company's strategy is based on exclusively purchasing stakes in bitcoin. BTC AB's goal is to rapidly accumulate bitcoin to increase its "bitcoin per share," a metric the company refers to as "bitcoin yield."
Prior to the listing, BTC AB raised SEK 150 million in capital. True to its strategy, SEK 148 million of this was immediately used to purchase bitcoin.
The investment firm's focus on crypto will also be evident in its financial reporting, which will emphasize the amount of bitcoin represented by each share.
BTC AB will continuously issue new shares whenever its own shares trade at a premium to bitcoin.
"A premium isn't a requirement, but what is necessary is that there's a difference between our NAV (Net Asset Value) and the company's market value. As long as there's a premium--or a discount--we'll be able to act and create bitcoin yield," CEO Christoffer De Geer told Finwire.
According to De Geer, BTC AB will only trade in bitcoin. No transactions will take place in other digital assets.
"We view bitcoin as a digital monetary infrastructure, much like the internet was for information. Other cryptocurrencies can be compared to dot-com companies: lots of ideas, some innovation, but also high speculation and risk," De Geer said.
De Geer also told Finwire that having a liquid share is "crucial" for a bitcoin treasury company.
Cryptocurrencies like bitcoin have experienced a resurgence in recent months. So far this year, bitcoin has risen by around 16 percent, trading above $108,000 on Tuesday. Part of this uptick can be attributed to U.S. President Donald Trump's crypto-friendly policies.
De Geer declined to speculate on where bitcoin's price will head in the future or BTC AB's outlook on the asset over the next five years.
When asked why investors should consider BTC AB, De Geer said it offers them a way to increase their exposure to the cryptocurrency without having to be actively involved themselves.
"The advantage of BTC AB compared to a certificate is that a certificate takes a percentage of your bitcoin exposure every year. With an investment in BTC AB, we instead hope to deliver more bitcoin over time, not less."
