Shares of banks and other financial institutions rose slightly as traders hedged their bets on the Federal Reserve's next move.

The consumer price index rose 2.7% in November, inching away from the Fed's 2% target.

The Justice Department has charged a third TD Bank employee for his alleged role in a money-laundering scheme that led to more than $3 billion in fines against the bank and prompted calls for greater accountability against TD executives.

David Bonderman, billionaire co-founder of private-equity firm TPG, died on Wednesday at the age of 82.
