The U.S. hog supply is expected to contract 1% from this time last year, the USDA reported Wednesday afternoon.

In its quarterly Hogs and Pigs Report, the USDA reported that total swine supply is 72.5 million head, which is 99% of the same time last year. Hogs kept for breeding totaled 6.2 million head, 99% of last year's total, and hogs marketed totaled 66.4 million head, 99% of this time last year.

The totals reported by the USDA fell roughly within the expectations of various analyst projections.

Pigs per litter hit a record for the quarter, according to the USDA, with each sow averaging a litter of 11 piglets for the quarter ended in May.

In trading Wednesday, most-active lean hog futures closed down 0.2% to $1.03575 per pound. Meanwhile, live cattle futures finished down 0.4% to $1.32175 per pound.
