Producers of metals and other raw materials fell as the U.S. dollar ticked up against rivals.

MP Materials shares rose after the Fort Worth, Texas, rare-earth miner and processor said it had begun production of a magnet it plans to mass-produce for General Motors' use in electric-vehicle manufacturing and other domestic purposes.

China has recently restricted exports of rare-earth minerals, as it seeks to respond to President Trump's threat of higher tariffs. Trump has hinted he's open to further negotiations on trade with China, saying he might visit China this year following a conversation with President Xi Jinping last week.

Aluminum maker Alcoa shares ticked up in late trading following an earnings report more or less in line with Wall Street expectations.
