Shares of energy companies fell as a rebound in commodity prices ran out of steam.

Natural gas futures slipped in the wake of inventory data, after settling near the highs of the year earlier in the week.

Oil futures ticked up, and have risen about 3.9% for the week so far, thought volatility appears to be intensifying around the psychologically significant $80 per barrel level.
