A2A AND FNM: AGREEMENT FOR THE PRODUCTION OF GREEN

HYDROGEN

Milan, December 2, 2020 - A2A and FNM have signed a Memorandum of Understanding for the analysis and identification of the best way to generate and supply green hydrogen from renewable sources and from material recovery to power the new trains on the Brescia-Iseo-Edolo railway line announced by FNM on November 26.

FNM and Trenord's plan is to create the first Italian "Hydrogen Valley" in Sebino and Valcamonica, equipping it with a fleet of hydrogen trains effective from 2023. The project, called H2iseO, in addition to the new trains that will replace the current diesel-powered trains on the Brescia-Iseo-Edolo line managed by FERROVIENORD (a 100% FNM company) has also the goal of building hydrogen production plants, initially intended for the new clean energy trains. Subsequently, by 2025, the plan calls for an extension of the hydrogen solution to local public transit, with about 40 vehicles managed in Valcamonica by FNMAutoservizi (a 100% FNM company), with the possibility of opening up for use to freight logistics.

A2A, the second largest national generator of electricity by installed electricity generation capacity, with a portfolio of plants a large share of which deriving from renewable sources, can actively contribute to the implementation of the Hydrogen Valley proposed by FNM.

In the territory, also the Group's technologically advanced assets are of strategic importance as part of the circular economy since they can further optimise waste cycle management by integrating the production of green hydrogen.

The collaboration between these two large companies, their experience and their presence in the Valcamonica area will guarantee further acceleration for the hydrogen-powered zero impact mobility project, allowing its implementation in a short time.

"The project for the first Hydrogen Valley in Italy, promoted by FNM in collaboration with Trenord - explained FNM Chairman Andrea Gibelli - is part of a wider strategy that aims to create mobility services, built according to criteria of environmental and economic sustainability. The Valle Camonica is an area that lends itself particularly well to this project, thanks to the widespread presence of power stations that generate energy from hydroelectric power but not only. The first trains that will circulate from 2023 will draw from the territory, according to a supply chain and circular economy approach, the energy necessary to move with zero environmental impact, creating the first example of total decarbonisation of local public transport. The hope is that this experience will become a comparison and a model to be replicated also in other areas of Italy".

"It is with immense pleasure that we sign this agreement with FNM to contribute to the creation of an infrastructure dedicated to the production of hydrogen," said Renato Mazzoncini, A2A CEO. "We are committed to promote decarbonisation through a practical approach and to participate in meeting the European goal of zero CO2 emissions by 2050: A2A's multi-business nature along with its experience in energy generation and circular economy allow us to offer different solutions for the production of green hydrogen. In order to develop the potential of this resource we have recently entered into agreements with SNAM and ARDIAN, to which we can add this important piece on a strategic sector such as mobility".
