Shuaibah desalination plant built by Abengoa, awarded at the 2020 Global Water Awards

September 3, 2020

  • The reverse osmosis desalination plant has a water supply capacity of 250,000 m3/d and it is located in the Makkah region, in the Shuaibah complex, which is considered the largest desalination complex in the world.

September, 3rd, 2020 - Abengoa (MCE: ABG/P:SM), the international company that applies innovative technology solutions for sustainability in the infrastructure, energy and water sectors, has been awarded by the prestigious publication of the water sector Global Water Intelligence (GWI) in its annual awards, in the category of Desalination Plant of the Year, for the reverse osmosis desalination plant at the Shuaibah complex, located in Saudi Arabia.

Abengoa and Fisia Italimpianti were responsible for the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) of the project, that has a capacity of 250,000 m3/d and was officially inaugurated in July 2019. Saudi Water Partnership Company ('SWPC') acted as the offtaker, while ACWA Power is the owner and operator.

GWI highlights that 'despite having to cope with a wide range of hostile operating conditions' and thanks to the 'careful design work by EPC contractors', this plant has proven to be 'deftly optimized to balance the highest levels of efficiency while keeping to the stringent capex requirements seen in today's desalination market'. In addition, its 'ultra-compact design reduces footprint and unnecessary capital costs, while chemical dosing and post-treatment facilities are fine-tuned to keep the operating burden to a minimum'. Finally, from GWI they point out that the plant 'was completed just 21 months after the signing of agreements with the client, a truly stunning achievement for a plant of this scale, complexity and importance, and a timeline which sets a standard for ambitious contractors across this industry'.

This year, due to the current circumstances resulting from the global COVID-19 pandemic, the GWI is communicating online the winners of its 12 categories.

On October 1st, GWI will publish the winner of the Desalination Company of the Year category, where Abengoa is shortlisted, competing with companies such as ACWA Power, Aquatech and Tecton Engineering.

This recognition is further proof of Abengoa's world leadership position in the desalination sector, with a global installed capacity of more than 1.7 million m3/d that will be expanded to 4.3 million when completed the portfolio in execution.
