A consortium led by ACWA Power International has secured financing and started construction on a 50-MW concentrated solar power (CSP) plant in South Africa. The consortium, which also includes Public Investment Corp. (PIC) of South Africa, Lereko Solafrica Investment, Lereko Metier Solafrica Fund 1, Lereko Metier Sustainable Capital Fund, Kurisani Solafrica Investments and Solafrica Community Investment Co, won the project in the second tender of South Africa's Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Programme (REIPPP).

The Bokpoort CSP facility, to be situated in South Africa's Northern Cape province, will have a storage capacity of 9.3 hours, allowing it to generate power even at night throughout the year. It power output is estimated at over 200 GWh annually. Construction of the facility will be carried out by a consortium of SK Electronica y Electricidad SA, Acciona Infrastructuras SA and Acciona Ingenieria SA, part of Spanish Acciona SA (MCE:ANA), Sener Ingenieria y Sistemas SA and South African Crowie Concessions (Pty) Ltd. ACWA Power's subsidiary NOMAC and Invest In Africa Energy Services are to provide operation and maintenance services for the plant, once operational.

The output of the CSP plant will be sold to South African utility group Eskom.
