Aviation stocks were broadly lower in India during afternoon trade after an accident involving an Air India plane.

India's flag carrier said Thursday that a flight headed to the U.K. from India was "involved in an incident."

"Flight AI171, operating Ahmedabad-London Gatwick, was involved in an incident today, 12 June 2025," the airline said in a post on X.

Shares of Interglobe Aviation, parent of budget carrier IndiGo, were down 3.3%. Low-cost airline SpiceJet was 2.4% lower.

Global Vectra Helicorp, India's largest private helicopter company, was roughly flat. Taal Enterprises, which specializes in aviation services, lost 3.5%.

Adani Enterprises, which owns the Ahmedabad airport, dropped 1.9%.

Air India's chairman, N. Chandrasekaran, confirmed that the flight was involved in a tragic accident.

"Further updates will be shared as we receive more verified information," he wrote in a message posted on Tata Group's X account.
