ADT Inc. said it brought an action for willful trademark infringement, unfair competition and related violations against Ring LLC, an Amazon.com Inc. company and provider of smart home security devices.

ADT's complaint alleges that in March, Ring adopted a blue octagon mark that is indistinguishable from ADT's blue octagon mark, which is protected under numerous federal trademark registrations.

ADT said its blue octagon is iconic in the security market, and Ring allegedly attempted to assimilate the logo into its Ring Alarm Outdoor Siren.

ADT said this could be Ring's second alleged attempted theft of ADT property. ADT said Ring in 2017 obtained an unauthorized copy of a software platform, related trade secrets, and other assets that ADT had spent two years and millions of dollars developing. ADT brought suit in Delaware and succeeded in enjoining Ring from using the platform before Ring settled with ADT.
