Aena SME SA said Wednesday that it swung to a loss for 2020 as air-travel demand plunged in Spain and world-wide because of the coronavirus pandemic.

The Spanish airport operator booked losses of 126.8 million euros ($154.1 million) for 2020 compared with a profit of EUR1.44 billion the year prior and said that it is the first loss it has reported since 2012.

Traffic across its network of airports fell 70.9% to 89.3 million passengers last year, while revenue plunged 50.2% to EUR2.24 billion, it said.

"In the short term, there are no signs of recovery in traffic due to the new wave of contagion that is spreading throughout Europe and the different restrictive measures applied by the different European countries in response to it," it said.
