AFRY has won a public tender for a design of a new railway connecting Prague Airport with the Czech capital, including a large transfer terminal. The assignment is a part of one of the Czech largest rail infrastructure projects and one of the railway BIM (building information modelling) pilot programs.
The state-owned railway manager Správa železnic has awarded AFRY with an important public contract to prepare the last stage project documentation for a new line between Prague Ruzyně Station and Prague Václav Havel Airport. Currently, the Czech capital is the only European metropolis besides Dublin lacking a direct rail connection between the city center and the international airport.
The assignment also includes a design of a new transfer terminal, creating a link between the railway, urban and suburban buses, and eventually the trams. It will also provide an extensive Park & Ride parking, expanding the infrastructure facilities of the airport area.
- This is a strategic and very important project, necessary for the City of Prague, Václav Havel Airport, the international travelers and also the Prague inhabitants. The new line will provide a comfort while saving the travelling time. Furthermore, the new terminal will become a fast, efficient, high-quality, and environmentally friendly alternative to the individual car transport, says Ivo Šimek, Country Manager for the Czech Republic and Slovakia.
The project is one of the few new railway constructions in the Czech Republic. Czech railroad network is one of the densest in the world, therefore the contracts for the new lines are rather rare.
AFRY will deliver the assignment fully in 3D/BIM. Being one of the authors of the data standard for the State Fund for Transport Infrastructure, AFRY has been supporting the digitalization of the construction industry in the Czech Republic for a long time, particularly the introduction of the BIM method into the public sector. This assignment is one of the Czech BIM railway pilot programs.
