SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) _ Agilent Technologies Inc. (A) on Monday reported fiscal fourth-quarter earnings of $222 million.

On a per-share basis, the Santa Clara, California-based company said it had profit of 71 cents. Earnings, adjusted for amortization costs and non-recurring costs, were 98 cents per share.

The results surpassed Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of eight analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for earnings of 91 cents per share.

The scientific instrument maker posted revenue of $1.48 billion in the period, which also beat Street forecasts. Six analysts surveyed by Zacks expected $1.4 billion.

For the year, the company reported profit of $719 million, or $2.30 per share. Revenue was reported as $5.34 billion.

For the current quarter ending in February, Agilent expects its per-share earnings to range from 85 cents to 88 cents.

The company said it expects revenue in the range of $1.42 billion to $1.43 billion for the fiscal first quarter. Analysts surveyed by Zacks had expected revenue of $1.4 billion.

Agilent expects full-year earnings in the range of $3.57 to $3.67 per share, with revenue ranging from $5.6 billion to $5.7 billion.

Agilent shares have increased 32% since the beginning of the year, while the Standard & Poor's 500 index has climbed 11%. In the final minutes of trading on Monday, shares hit $112.21, an increase of 43% in the last 12 months.
