AGL Energy (AGL) was today awarded a Gold tier employer ranking at the 2017 Australian LGBTI Inclusion Awards in recognition for its commitment in fostering equality and Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Intersex (LGBTI) inclusion in the company.

Overall, AGL was amongst the top 8.6% of employers of the 116 employers who participated in the Australian Workplace Equality Index this year.

Executive General Manager Group Operations and executive sponsor of AGL's LGBTI inclusion network called 'Shine', Doug Jackson, said he is delighted with the company's improvement on last year's rankings where AGL was awarded Silver tier status and ranked 13th among the 87 employers, and in the top six publicly listed companies.

'This is wonderful recognition of our sustained focus and effort to build an LGBTI-inclusive company for our people, our customers and the broader community. We're committed to creating a workplace where all of our people feel safe and valued.'

In the last 12 months, Gender Identity & Transitioning Support Guidelines have been developed by an AGL working group that included representatives from its Shine network, and its external LGBTI diversity partner, Pride and Diversity.

'These Guidelines outline a framework for supporting AGL people who are thinking about, or in the process of, gender transition at work. They are designed to educate everyone on how they can create a safe and supportive environment.

'We recognise that all gender diverse people may face some unique personal challenges, particularly when affirming their gender at work,' Mr Jackson said.

'Our number one priority is ensuring all of our people feel comfortable bringing their true, authentic selves to work.'

In 2017, AGL pledged its support for marriage equality and sponsored the Melbourne Midsumma Festival as a Gold Partner and Sydney Mardi Gras Film Festival.

The AWEI sets the national benchmark for LGBTI workplace inclusion is published annually by Pride in Diversity.
