In the first volume, Vladimir Davidov (1809-1882), a Russian jurist and scholar, records the monuments and places he visited in 1835 during his journey in Greece and Asia Minor and describes the beauty of the landscape and the purity of people. At the same time, he addresses the modern history and organization of the newly-founded Greek State as well as the conditions prevailing in the wider region of the Balkan Peninsula and Asia Minor. The second volume, in addition to the 44 lithographs depicting various places and monuments visited by Davidov, includes the watercolors according to which the lithographs were created; these watercolors are now the property of the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts in Moscow.
