GridSense learns by means of artificial intelligence

Zurich -Alpiq will present the innovative distribution grid technology GridSense in Germany at the 'E-world - energy & water' international trade fair in Essen. An algorithm-based solution intelligently controls production and load, resulting in optimised distribution grid utilisation.

The expansion of new renewable energies has changed the situation of distribution grid operators: They must now master fluctuating grid load, a challenge arising due to decentralised electricity production. Power grid utilisation is optimised through intelligent control of consumption and production by means of smarter technology. GridSense ensures grid stability, and distribution grid operators can curtail investments in grid expansion. With GridSense, Alpiq is positioning itself as an agile market leader in energy services. Alpiq is introducing a technology that is optimally suited to the dynamic, efficiency-oriented environment of the energy turnaround.

GridSense in brief

Thanks to artificial intelligence, GridSense de-centrally and fully autonomously balances flexible loads generated for example by charging stations for electric vehicles, boilers and heat pumps within a distribution grid. In addition, GridSense also integrates household batteries in the optimisation process. This is done taking into account the comfort level of the end customer, as well as the feed-in volumes from new renewable energies. Rolling grid forecasts generated by the different GridSense units, proactively and automatically control loads and utilise available storage.

The technology primarily consists of an algorithm that constantly measures various parameters such as grid load and electricity consumption, and incorporates weather forecasts and electricity prices in calculations. In addition, the algorithm learns the behaviour of device users. These processes take place without the user noticing or having to forfeit comfort at home or work, enabling efficient, economic utilisation of electrical energy.

Cost savings, transparency and services

GridSense offers significant added value, in particular for distribution grid operators. When grids reach their capacity limits, costly grid expansion often appears to be the only option. However, this is rarely the most efficient solution to handle irregularly occurring loads, particularly in grids with a high proportion of photovoltaic and electro-mobility systems. Here GridSense represents an extremely interesting alternative.

GridSense offers detailed overview and forecasting possibilities on energy consumption in the distribution grid through the high number of measurement parameters. Among other things, this provides a basis for new customer services and business models. For example, thanks to GridSense, virtual power plants can also be realised.

Alpiq will present its retrofit plug-on solution, inside solutions as a fully integrated element, and the GridSense data management system to the interested public at E-world. Find more information under www.gridsense.ch or at the Alpiq E-world stand (Hall 3 / Stand 3-266).
