Amazon plans to invest over $5 billion in a cluster of data centers in Taiwan. The investment will support the launch of a new cloud services region on the island.
The region will give developers, startups and enterprises more options to run applications and serve end-users from AWS data centers in Taiwan, the company said Thursday.
This will ensure that customers like TSMC and Trend Micro, who want to keep their content onshore, can do so, the Seattle-based tech giant said.
The launch of the AWS Asia Pacific (Taipei) Region shows Amazon's "strong commitment to Taiwan," Cho Jung-tai, the premier of Taiwan, said.
AWS, Amazon's cloud-computing arm, plans to hire and train local staff to operate the new region.
Amazon's multibillion-dollar investment will be used for the construction, connection, operation, and maintenance of its data centers in Taiwan, and signals strong demand for cloud and AI computing.
AWS has more cloud and infrastructure regions in the pipeline, including in Chile, New Zealand and Saudi Arabia.
