SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) _ Ambarella Inc. (AMBA) on Tuesday reported a loss of $10.8 million in its fiscal first quarter.

On a per-share basis, the Santa Clara, California-based company said it had a loss of 29 cents. Earnings, adjusted for one-time gains and costs, came to 44 cents per share.

The results beat Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of nine analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for earnings of 37 cents per share.

The video-compression chipmaker posted revenue of $90.3 million in the period, also topping Street forecasts. Seven analysts surveyed by Zacks expected $90 million.

For the current quarter ending in August, Ambarella said it expects revenue in the range of $78 million to $82 million.

Ambarella shares have fallen 58% since the beginning of the year. In the final minutes of trading on Tuesday, shares hit $85.22, a drop of 15% in the last 12 months.
