In the latest episode of the Big Ideas podcast, Thoumi and Clark discuss how investor and analyst attention is having knock-on effects for the packaging landscape and driving innovation, creating opportunities and making lower impact products. The financial market is starting to take a greater interest in plastic waste but how can this interest drive change for more responsible packaging and positive environmental outcomes?

China is rapidly expanding its facilities to produce plastic and export it to regions across the world. The ability to manufacture and export plastics into a market that is increasingly becoming saturated by plastics is an issue that affects many looking to drive change for more responsible packaging.

The pair also touched on the multiple announcements around increasing demand for plastics and the simultaneous rise in the supply of plastics - at the same time that the packaging industry is seeking to move closer to the idea of a circular economy.

This will ultimately result in a decrease in demand for virgin resins and an increase of use of recycled content; the disconnect in both the capacity and the demand may result in new changes and potential opportunity for those with financial interest in plastic packaging.

Working to fully embrace a circular economy takes time, even as more companies across the world begin to focus their objectives toward becoming more sustainability focused. In order for industry experts to convince the financial market to take a greater interest in packaging, they need to work with investors on specific key performance indicators that show inspiring progress. This will, in turn, help the whole sector to embracing sustainability as an essential part of its operations.
