FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) _ American Airlines Group Inc. (AAL) on Thursday reported third-quarter net income of $169 million, after reporting a loss in the same period a year earlier.

The Fort Worth, Texas-based company said it had net income of 25 cents per share. Losses, adjusted for non-recurring gains, were 99 cents per share.

The results surpassed Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of five analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for a loss of $1.04 per share.

The world's largest airline posted revenue of $8.97 billion in the period, also surpassing Street forecasts. Four analysts surveyed by Zacks expected $8.93 billion.

American Airlines shares have climbed 24% since the beginning of the year. The stock has risen 52% in the last 12 months.
