American Express : Chief Colleague Experience Officer Monique Herena Shares Her Thoughts on Leadership Resilience and What Makes Amex a Great Place to Work

01/19/2022 | 06:16pm EDT

The HR Digest Names Herena as Part of The League of Extraordinary CHROs

Profound and immediate changes over the past few years have impacted the future of work, says international industry publication, The HR Digest, and human resources professionals are leading their organizations in real-time agility and resilience. For its January 2022 edition, the magazine recognized eight HR professionals, including American Express Chief Colleague Experience Officer, Monique Herena, for their leadership in such uncertain times. "These are the men and women who helped propel a transformation by facilitating monumental changes to make their companies future-ready," said The HR Digest.

As part of The HR Digest's League of Extraordinary CHROs feature, Herena shared that American Express is committed to backing its colleagues, which is essential to providing customers with the best in products and services every day. More than ever, the Company continues to lead with a focus on promoting a flexible and inclusive #TeamAmex culture. From Amex Flex, a new way of working, to The Ambition Project, a program that encourages women to fully embrace their ambition and pay it forward, the Company continues to focus on better understanding the unique experiences of all its colleagues to create meaningful work and growth opportunities.

When asked what American Express' secret sauce is for being recognized several times as a "Great Place to Work", Herena shared that "We firmly believe the best way to back our customers is to back our colleagues. To do that, we offer a compelling colleague value proposition, which includes meaningful work and growth opportunities, a flexible and inclusive culture, competitive pay and benefits, and more. At its core, our colleague value proposition places our colleagues at the center of everything we do, focusing on the whole person, holistic well-being, and a strong sense of belonging."

Herena also discussed settling into a virtual work culture, prioritizing motivation and connectivity with others in a time defined by rapid change and evolution. A competency now required of business leaders is resilience, she said. "Resilience is built through a series of intentional behaviors -they can be learned, practiced, and strengthened through experience. Resilient leadership is all about motivating teams, sustaining energy levels, and maintaining a growth orientation. We do this by inspiring, leading, adapting, and performing through disruptive changes, both on a personal and organizational level, over time. We use these experiences to make us even better."
