CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. (AP) _ American Public Education Inc. (APEI) on Tuesday reported a loss of $3.8 million in its third quarter.

The Charles Town, West Virginia-based company said it had a loss of 20 cents per share.

The results exceeded Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of five analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for a loss of 25 cents per share.

The for-profit education company posted revenue of $149.5 million in the period, also topping Street forecasts. Five analysts surveyed by Zacks expected $146.6 million.

American Public Education expects a full-year loss of $5.94 to $5.87 per share.

American Public Education shares have decreased 44% since the beginning of the year. In the final minutes of trading on Tuesday, shares hit $12.37, a decline of 52% in the last 12 months.
