Mon/Yough Trail Council constructs environmentally friendly, free water resource through foundation grant

Elizabeth Township Pa. (Oct. 8, 2021)- Pennsylvania American Water officials today hosted State Sen. James Brewster, State Rep. Michael Puskaric, County Executive Rich Fitzgerald, the Mon/Yough Trail Council (M/YTC), and other dignitaries to mark the completion of the construction of a hydration station at the Boston Trailhead of the Great Allegheny Passage. The eco-friendly feature, which will provide free tap water to trail users, was funded through a $19,000 grant from American Water Charitable Foundation.

The foundation's Keep Communities Flowing grant program provides community-based grants to support programs and projects that connect with one or more of American Water's core focus areas. The grant supported the construction of a hydration station, which includes a water fountain, bottle and pet bowl fillers, and a cleaning hose attachment for one of the busiest trailheads along the Great Allegheny Passage.

"This project embodies American Water's core focus areas of Water and the Environment, Water and Healthy Living, Environmental Education and Community Sustainability," said Carrie Williams, president of the American Water Charitable Foundation. "We are proud to fund these types of projects that further American Water's ongoing commitment to being a good neighbor and steward of the environment."

Mon/Yough Trail Council President Tim Banfield added, "the Mon/Yough Trail Council is extremely grateful for the award from the 2020 Keep Communities Flowing Grant Program of the American Water Charitable Foundation. The hydration station at the Boston Trail Access will help hydrate visitors along one of the busiest trailheads along Great Allegheny Passage."

The M/YTC was one of 12 grant recipients in 2020. The M/YTC section of the Great Allegheny Passage through the Boston area receives close to 70,000 visits a year.

"The trail systems throughout the commonwealth are not only for recreation but vital pieces to economic growth in our trail communities," said State Sen. Brewster. "Adding this hydration station on the Mon/Yough Trail portion of the Great Allegheny Passage is proof of how working together brings great things for those that live, work and play here."

Celebrating its third year, the Keep Communities Flowing grant program provides grants up to $20,000 to support 501(c)(3) public charities whose program or project connects to one or more of American Water's core focus areas of Water and the Environment, Water and Healthy Living, Environmental Education, and Community Sustainability. During the last three years, the Keep Communities Flowing grant program has funded 32 projects totaling $456,000 in communities served by American Water.

"It is great to see this improvement made to our trail system. At a time when so many are getting back outside and staying active, I would like to thank PA American Water for their commitment to our community and the health and well-being of our residents," said State Rep. Puskaric. "Providing clean drinking water does not simply stop at our homes and businesses, but also for our outdoor recreation space as well."
