The presumably extremely expensive Reality Pro headset, which Apple will unveil on June 5, is being sold for now. Development of the VR glasses is said to have cost more than $1 billion a year.

Consideration has even been given to selling the headset at a loss to gain market share, according to sources who spoke to Bloomberg.

There is much disagreement within Apple about the project that took seven years to develop. Quite a few executives doubt the market opportunities. So far, the VR market has proven to be a niche market and Apple won't be able to change that very much.

After initially setting its sights on lightweight augmented-reality glasses, Apple gradually drifted toward something more like existing devices because of technological limitations. For now, for example, an external battery must be plugged in.

For now, lightweight glasses are not coming at all. Apple Glasses, a pair of glasses codenamed N421, was intended for the consumer market, and was to be a kind of ski goggles.

Key figures within Apple, such as software boss Craig Federighi have kept their distance from the headset. Johny Srouji, Apple's senior vice president for hardware technologies, iou have been privately skeptical. CEO Tim Cook is said to have barely interfered with the project.
