Blackwater Gold to Start Construction in 2022

The Blackwater Gold Project, scheduled to start construction in 2022, has the potential to develop into one of the largest gold mines in Canada.

The project is located on the northern flank of Mount Davidson, approximately 110 kilometres southwest of Vanderhoof and 160 kilometres southwest of Prince George.

The proposed mine site is located within the traditional territories of Lhoosk'uz Dené Nation and Ulkatcho First Nation. Other components of Blackwater, including the existing Kluskus forest service road and the transmission line, cross the traditional territories of Nadleh Whut'en First Nation, Saik'uz First Nation, Stellat'en First Nation and Nazko First Nation.

The project received provincial and federal environmental approvals in 2019. It is currently in the development stage and final permitting as required to build and operate the mine is in progress.

The transmission line routing was finalized in the fall of 2021 and

permitting to build and operate the transmission line is in progress.

The transmission line will provide a clean and reliable source of energy to the Project.

Providing Clean Energy to the Blackwater Site

Providing reliable, low-cost clean energy to the Blackwater site through a transmission line provides an opportunity for Blackwater to become one of the lowest carbon footprint open pit gold mines in the world. In August 2021, the project reached a major milestone when Artemis executed a binding memorandum of understanding (MOU) for the Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) contract to construct the 135-kilometer, 230-kilovolt transmission line and high-voltage substation for the Blackwater Project.

The MOU is between Artemis and a consortium of Carisbrooke Consulting Inc., Westpark Electric Ltd., and 1319071 B.C. Ltd. (representing the Nadleh Whut'en, Saik'uz, and Stellat'en First Nations). The MOU provides a guaranteed maximum price (GMP)

for the EPC contract and was an important step in moving the Blackwater Project forward.

Completing Permitting and Commencing Construction

Artemis Gold's top priority for 2022 is to complete permitting activities and commence construction on the Blackwater Project. The Blackwater team submitted the major mine permits in late 2021. Permit approvals are required before any major mine construction can start.

Construction will take place in several phases. The Early Works construction phase will consist of limited land clearing, grubbing and site preparation. This phase will take a measured and incremental approach so that the site is ready for full construction when permits are received.

Early Works construction could start as early as April 2022. This phase will prepare for full construction which can start once the Major Works permits are approved.

X 135-km, 230kV transmission line from BC Hydro's Glenannan substation (near Endako, BC) to the Blackwater plant site, along an up to 140-metre-wide corridor

  • X Transmission line area covers approximately 541 hectares

  • X Existing roads will be used to access the ROW

    X

Constructed within a 40-metre width Right of Way (ROW) for most of the route, with up to a 50-metre width for longer spans in select areas

  • X For construction, new access trails, stream crossings, equipment and materials laydown will be located within the cleared ROW to minimize the environmental footprint and limit creation of new access

Working with the Community to Protect our Environment

At Artemis Gold, we act as responsible stewards of the environment and look for opportunities to reduce our impact on the ecosystems in which we operate.

As part of the Environmental Assessment process and our commitment to protecting the health, safety and well-being of the communities in which we work, the Blackwater Project conducted socio-economic and environmental baseline studies. These studies will be used to inform our management plans, monitor and mitigate the impacts of the mine.

Several of our environment, health and socio-economic plans are executed in part by committees consisting of community members, First Nation representatives and government regulators. These committees, which are in place for the life of the mine, help shape our Project and inform our actions.

Monitoring Our Impact: Environmental Field Programs

During the summer of 2021, the Blackwater team, supported by staff from a number of local First Nations, conducted environmental field programs to collect baseline data. Their work included fisheries studies, wildlife and wetland surveys, and environmental data collection.

Biologists studied fish in the main creeks that drain from the mine area and a nearby lake. They collected data on fish, water chemistry, stream flow and temperature. This information enhances our understanding of the aquatic ecosystems in and near the mine area. Wildlife and wetland surveys around the mine site and along the proposed transmission line focused on amphibians, bats, birds and habitat for species at risk.

The baseline data collected will allow us to monitor and mitigate our impact on the ecosystems in and around the mine.

Environmental field programs will continue in 2022, with focus on caribou and other wildlife, wetlands and water.

Introducing the Indigenous and Community Relations Team

Have a question or comment about the Project? Let your first point of contact be the Indigenous and Community Relations Team!

The Blackwater Project has established an Indigenous and Community Relations team. Team members come from throughout the Blackwater region and have diverse backgrounds and experiences. Some are members of local First Nations.

The Indigenous and Community Relations team acts as a liaison with local communities and First Nations. They work to develop public awareness about the Blackwater Project and build effective relationships built on trust, transparency and open communication.

The team is responsible for implementing processes, programs and communications that support economic, employment, business and social development benefits and opportunities in local communities.

James Witzke - Indigenous and Community Relations Manager

James oversees the Indigenous and community relations aspects of the Project. He is responsible for implementing processes, programs and communications that ensure the Project brings positive and sustainable benefits to local Indigenous nations and nearby communities.

Val Erickson - Community Relations Advisor

Val is actively involved in all aspects of the Project's community engagement. Her work includes government and community relations and stakeholder engagement.

Barb Teichroeb - Project Office Coordinator

Barb provides administrative support services to the Indigenous and Community Relations team.

Devin has been working at the Blackwater Project for the past year and a half. He recently joined us as a General Labourer. Artemis Gold sponsored Devin to take the BC Mine Site Supervisor Certificate. The mine site is required to have an employee on site with this training. The training allows Devin to be certified for roles such as

In the Spotlight: Devin Chantyman

Shift Boss or Level II Supervisor for Open Pit or Underground mining, or a level I or Level II Supervisor for Exploration or General Surface Operations.

Here's what Devin has to say about his experience so far:

I have enjoyed working at the Blackwater Project for the past 17 months. I am eager to learn more and can't wait to reach my goal of being able to drive heavy equipment. I am looking forward to seeing you all up here.

Supporting Local & Regional Employment

We prioritize recruiting and hiring local people. The Blackwater Project currently has 30 employees. Of this team, 60% (18 people) are from local communities and 27% (8 people) are First Nations.

We plan to recruit and hire 40 new employees in 2022. These 40 positions will be permanent roles, expected to last for the life of the mine (22 years).

We expect to create approximately 563 jobs per year during the Project's construction phases and 457 jobs per year during operations.

If you are interested in working with us, you can view open positions and apply atwww.artemisgoldinc.com/careers or by contactinghr@artemisgoldinc.com.

Job Opportunity: Environmental Monitor

We are currently hiring two Environmental Monitors at the Blackwater site to represent the environmental interests of Lhoosk'uz Dene and Ulkatcho First Nations. This is an excellent opportunity for a team player who wants to grow with the company and be involved in environmental monitoring. Candidates must be a band member of either Lhoosk'uz Dene or Ulkatcho First Nation. Job-specific training will be provided. If you are interested, please contacthr@artemisgoldinc.com.
