Ashland scientist recognized at SCC 75th Annual Conference with prestigious award

WILMINGTON, DE, December 15, 2021 - The Board of Directors of the Society of Cosmetic Chemists today presented Roger L. McMullen, Ph.D. and principal scientist, Ashland, with the Joseph P. Ciaudelli Award. The recognition was bestowed during the 75th Annual Scientific Meeting and Technology Showcase breakfast in New York City.

Joseph P. Ciaudelli Award

The Joseph P. Ciaudelli Award recognizes the best paper published in the Journal of Cosmetic Science during the calendar year. McMullen's paper, "Investigation of the internal structure of human hair with atomic force microscopy," was published in the Journal of Cosmetic Science | Vol. 71 No. 3.

McMullen has over 20 years of experience in the personal care industry with specialties in optics, imaging, and spectroscopy of hair and skin. Currently, he leads a group of six scientists in the Measurements Science department at Ashland. He received a B.S. in Chemistry from Saint Vincent College and completed his Ph.D. in Biophysical Chemistry at Seton Hall University.

McMullen actively engages and participates in educational activities in the personal care industry. He instructs courses at TRI-Princeton and in the SCC continuing education program. He is also an Adjunct Professor at Fairleigh Dickinson University and teaches Biochemistry to students pursuing M.S. degrees in Cosmetic Science and Pharmaceutical Chemistry. In addition, Roger is the author of the book, Antioxidants and the Skin, 2nd ed. published by CRC Press.

Prior to pursuing a career in science, Roger served in the U.S. Navy for four years on board the USS YORKTOWN (CG 48). He is fluent in Spanish and Catalan and enjoys playing the classical guitar.
