Brussels, May 26 (EFE).- The European Union will sue AstraZeneca for compensation worth 10 euros per dose for each day the delivery of AstraZeneca vaccines was delayed, according to attorneys representing the European Commission and EU member states.

The final compensation could amount to 200 million euros per day, according to estimations by the EU's legal team.

The EU lawsuit against AstraZeneca, launched under an emergency procedure, demands that the British-Swedish pharmaceutical company deliver all the doses agreed upon and not yet sent to member states.

The court is expected to reach a verdict by the end of July.

According to European Commission, the purpose of suing is not compensation, but rather leveraging the financial threat to receive the missing doses.

AstraZeneca signed an agreement with the Commission to deliver 300 million Covid-19 vaccines throughout the first half of 2021, but has only provided 55 million doses so far.

The EU is demanding at least 120 more doses be delivered by the end of June.

AstraZeneca will argue that the delivery schedule was only "indicative" and not legally binding, while the deliveries were subject to "best reasonable efforts" in the contract. EFE
