AT&T has announced its intention to deploy a commercial-scale Open Radio Access Network (Open RAN) in the USA, thanks to a five-year contract with Ericsson, during which its expenditure could approach $14 billion.

The Scandinavian telecom equipment manufacturer will 'further the efforts of the telecom industry and help build a more robust ecosystem of network infrastructure providers and suppliers', according to the US operator.

AT&T's Open RAN plan calls for 70% of its wireless network traffic to pass through open platforms by the end of 2026. It plans to have fully integrated open RAN sites operating in coordination with Ericsson and Fujitsu, from 2024.
