SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. (AP) _ Atara Biotherapeutics Inc. (ATRA) on Monday reported second-quarter net income of $18.5 million, after reporting a loss in the same period a year earlier.

The South San Francisco, California-based company said it had net income of 18 cents per share. Losses, adjusted for non-recurring gains, were 31 cents per share.

The results topped Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of five analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for a loss of 91 cents per share.

The drug developer posted revenue of $51.6 million in the period, also topping Street forecasts. Three analysts surveyed by Zacks expected $8.8 million.

In the final minutes of trading on Monday, the company's shares hit $3.63. A year ago, they were trading at $12.64.
