EVANS, Colo. - Sept. 21, 2021 - Atmos Energy and Greeley-Weld Habitat for Humanity are unveiling a natural gas-powered Zero Net Energy (ZNE) demonstration home in Evans, Colorado, with a dedication ceremony to be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 30, at 3928 Mission Springs Lane in Evans. Showcasing the reliability and affordability of natural gas, this ZNE home will demonstrate significantly reduced greenhouse gas emissions by producing as much energy as it consumes over the course of a year with a rooftop photovoltaic solar system, high-efficiency ENERGY STAR natural gas appliances, top-rated insulation, and windows, and other advanced weatherization features.

"Atmos Energy is proud to partner with Habitat for Humanity in providing innovative energy solutions that support affordable homeownership through lower utility bills," said Rob Leivo, Atmos Energy vice president of marketing. "Affordable housing provides strength and stability to individuals and families, and we are committed to meeting that need while also delivering resilient and sustainable energy options for all Coloradans. Our partnership has spanned two decades, and this will be our fifteenth Habitat for Humanity home built for the Greeley-Weld community."

Natural gas is the most affordable and reliable option for heating and cooking needs in Colorado and is used by more than 70 percent of residents in the region.

"Our client, Franky Rodriguez, is the perfect candidate to receive this beautiful five-bedroom home," said Cheri Witt-Brown, Greeley-Weld Habitat for Humanity president. "Franky is a wonderful, hard-working mother who is raising her four children including her adult son with special needs, and one grandchild. She has been renting an apartment for 30 years and considers this home to be a dream come true."

When the Habitat chapter interviewed Rodriguez for the project, she said her only concern was her ability to afford monthly utility bills.

"Building an energy-efficient home with affordable utility bills is our ultimate goal," added Leivo. "The energy report for the design of this ZNE home estimates average monthly utility bills at less than $50 combined for gas and electricity. This will certainly allow Ms. Rodriguez peace of mind when balancing her family budget."
