Bloom Surgicalwas selected as the winning team in the Connectivity category sponsored by Avnet at the sixth annual ASU Innovation Open (ASUio), held last month.

Established in 2017 by Arizona State University's Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineeringand Avnet, the ASUio is designed to challenge and advance university student innovators from across the nation who are aiming to develop hard technology ventures.

Bloom Surgical is eliminating visual frustration in minimally invasive surgery. Their first innovation, Laparovision, is a device that allows the surgeon to clear/wipe the camera from debris or fog without having to remove it from the body. There are about 5 million laparoscopic surgeries in the U.S. per year that use these cameras and have to be cleaned ~5x per hour.

A BYU graduate student created this miniature windshield wiper for cleaning laparoscopy camera lenses, allowing surgeons to focus on patients without having to remove and reinsert laparoscopes constantly during surgery. Jacob Sheffield developed this technology in the Compliant Mechanisms Research Lab on campus with help from BYU professor Larry Howell and mechanical engineering undergraduate Amanda Lytle. The device is so small it can rest on the end of a finger and was inspired by origami mechanisms.

As the winner of Avnet's $25,000 ASUio Connectivity prize, Avnet will also provide Bloom Surgical with guidance and mentorship, capitalizing on the hundred-year-old company's extensive knowledge of the entire technology value chain.

"The team at Bloom Surgical exemplifies the initiative, creativity and forward-thinking talents that we at Avnet have come to truly value during our last hundred years of driving technology forward," said Scott Tippin, director of Supplier Development, Avnet.

The ASUio provides critical venture mentorship and funding for student competitors who are launching a hardware enterprise within a wide variety of cutting-edge marketplaces including but not limited to hardware solutions, IoT and social enterprises with a focus on conscious capitalism.

The winners were announced during a virtual event on Feb. 11. Additional winners and sponsors of the program can be found at:https://asu.io/participants/
