Monte-Carlo Société des Bains de Mer pays tribute to Joséphine Baker

On 30 November 2021, at the Bar Américain of Hôtel de Paris Monte-Carlo

The date of 30 November 2021 is a historic one, when Joséphine Baker, great activist for the cause of women and minorities, will be interred at the Panthéon. To mark the occasion, Monte-Carlo Société des Bains de Mer has decided to hold an evening in her honour at the Bar Américain at Hôtel de Paris Monte-Carlo. This mythical venue, which has welcomed the biggest stars, will be the perfect backdrop for this moment of tribute to the jazz singer. The evening, with an orchestra and conference by journalist, Alex Jaffray, will be the opportunity to (re)discover a woman of character in a symbolic venue in the Principality of Monaco.

Tribute at Hôtel de Paris Monte-Carlo to Joséphine Baker on 30 November 2021

To pay tribute to Joséphine Baker, Monte-Carlo Société des Bains de Mer has selected an emblematic venue for jazz in Monaco, Le Bar Américain. Inside Hôtel de Paris Monte-Carlo, this bar has been frequented by the biggest stars in the world. To host the evening, Alex Jaffray, journalist specialised in the field of music, and producer, will speak about the star's life and career in two half-hour tributes, at 7pm and 10pm. He will be accompanied by the singer's most well-known tunes, played by a jazz group. Paying homage to this artist is also the opportunity to admire her, and to do this, unpublished archive photographs will be broadcast around the room throughout the evening.

Guests will leave humming to the artist's tunes and with a booklet designed just for this occasion, allowing them to immerse themselves again in the life of Joséphine Baker.

Joséphine Baker and Monte-Carlo Société des Bains de Mer, six years of shared history

The historic link between Joséphine Baker and the Principality of Monaco and Monte-Carlo Société des Bains de Mer began in 1969. It was thanks to the designer, André Levasseur, that Joséphine Baker met Princess Grace who generously welcomed the artist at Hôtel Hermitage Monte-Carlo following her financial difficulties. The star hosted the Monaco Red Cross Gala on 8 August 1969 for the first time at the Sporting d'été belonging to Monte-Carlo Société des Bains de Mer with her show, the "Joséphine Baker Show". "It's at the Monte-Carlo Sporting d'été where I approach perfection," she said after the show. This strong link with Monaco and Monte-Carlo Société des Bains de Mer took a new turn in 1974 with the creation of the show "Joséphine" for the inauguration of the new Monte-Carlo Sporting Club and its new Salle des Etoiles. There was so much enthusiasm surrounding the event that she returned to the Parisian stage to reproduce the show. With the support of Princess Grace, Monte-Carlo Société des Bains de Mer thus

contributed to the influence and renewal of the career of this unique personality who, after falling in love with Monaco, left a historical trace and still lies there today.
