BURNABY, British Columbia (AP) _ Ballard Power Systems Inc. (BLDP) on Monday reported a loss of $40.4 million in its first quarter.

The Burnaby, British Columbia-based company said it had a loss of 14 cents per share.

The results missed Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of seven analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for a loss of 11 cents per share.

The fuel cell technology company posted revenue of $21 million in the period, which also did not meet Street forecasts. Eight analysts surveyed by Zacks expected $24.2 million.

Ballard shares have decreased 38% since the beginning of the year. The stock has dropped 49% in the last 12 months.
