Spain

In Spain, Getnet has collaborated with Renfe in the "Cronos" system for direct access and payment at turnstiles with a bank card, which Renfe implements within the national network of Cercanías, the mid-distance service. Users can directly get on the train by presenting a physical bank card or mobile device at the turnstile, which means they do not have to buy a ticket beforehand and can save time. In addition, when someone places their card near the turnstile, the system calculates the best rate for the user.

In the words of Rubén Justel, General Manager of Getnet Europe, "this project is a giant step in the digitisation of payment on public transport. A project with national scope and driven by the principle of helping citizens at a time when card payments are now widespread, in every area of society. We are very proud that we have been able to offer Renfe industry experience of our retail banking and digital payments teams in order to create a simpler and more agile transport experience for all Cercanías users".

This project also consolidates Getnet Europe's leadership in the digitisation of payment on public transport, after we have spent more than three years working and innovating with the main operators. This has brought about successes such as the award of the Madrid Regional Transport Consortium (CRTM), which manages 50% of public transport in Spain, the fleet of buses in the city of Santander (Cantabria), the buses of Valladolid or the first digital payment project in Spain with the Municipal Transport Company (EMT) of Madrid, which allows its citizens and tourists to make contactless payments on its 2,100 buses, 3,000 public bicycles (BiciMAD) and cable car.

These are all clear examples of how innovation and payment technology facilitate and contribute to improving the experience of a daily process for millions of people who use public transport every day, which underpins the mission of PagoNxt to help individuals and businesses and to create simple, fast and secure payment opportunities for businesses and individuals around the world.
