Recently, Baosteel self-developed heavy plate with maximum thickness of 178mm for self-elevating marine platform spud leg pass the type approval by ABS classification society on the base of approval by ABS, DNV, GL, CCS four classification societies' product certification in the past year. This product is the highest level, the largest thickness, the highest performance and requirements product among the products for offshore platform heavy plate, which means Baosteel has the supply capacity for full range of offshore platform heavy plate, with great importance for promoting China's offshore platform plate localization.

Offshore platform heavy plate is mainly used for self-elevating, semi-submersible, FPSO and other offshore marine manufacturing, which has high access threshold and higher technical difficulty, reflecting comprehensive heavy plate production capacity and technical standards of steel plant. From the construction of 5m heavy plate production line, Baosteel started developing offshore platform plate, and gradually aimed at developing high-end variety, with clear market positioning with high-grade products as the leading role. In 2009, via supplying two self-elevating offshore platform for CNOOC, Baosteel heavy plate products successfully entered into the high-grade steel market for offshore platform, filling the domestic gap, and breaking the foreign monopoly. Since then, Baosteel continues to accelerate products development, further improving product quality, successfully supplying products for many well-known domestic and foreign users.

Currently, dividing in accordance with ASTM (American), EN (European), each classification societies and API (American Petroleum Institute) specification or standard, Baosteel has four series heavy products for offshore platform. In recent years, these products have been supplied for key projects construction by domestic well-known users such as CNOOC, CNPC, Waigaoqiao, ZPMC, China Merchants Heavy Industries, receiving recognition from many landmark marine projects. In addition, the products are also supplied to important projects from oversea customers including Petrobras, Singapore Sembcorp and others. Among them, the high grade EQ series extra-thick steel plate as the representative of competitive products have the features of high strength, high tenacity, good weldability, widely used in the key structural parts of the offshore platform, popular with users. And the self-elevating marine platform spud leg which just pass the type approval is not only with outstanding performance, but also breaks the monopoly by foreign steel mills on high price and limited purchasing, which has extraordinary  significance for promoting China's offshore platform construction and energy development.
