Barclays PLC said Friday that Ian Cheshire will be stepping down as a director and chairman of Barclays Bank UK PLC and that he will be succeeded by Crawford Gillies with effect from Jan. 1.

Mr. Cheshire, who will stay on the board of Barclays until its next annual general meeting in May to ensure a smooth transition, helped establish Barclays UK as a ring-fenced bank, the U.K. lender said.

Mr. Gillies will remain on the Barclays board alongside his Barclays UK role, the bank said.
