Chemistry in action at Otway Gas Plant

Date

28 September 2022

Beach Energy is helping students to bring chemistry classes to life, recently hosting six students from Timboon P12 School for a site tour of the Otway Gas Plant.

The Year 11 Chemistry students undertook a safety induction before learning about hydrocarbons, the location of Australia's gas basins, how natural gas is found both on and offshore, processing of gas from reservoir to the plant, and then sold into homes and businesses across Victoria.

Otway Production Manager, Kevin Galea said, "It was great to host the students and show them how natural gas can be produced sustainably and safely.

"At the plant, gas from local reservoirs is processed with various elements separated, purified and prepared for sale within Australian markets - Beach's gas is not sold overseas.

"Our industry remains a key employer for the region, and I would like to see the next generation of employees and contractors come from the local area.

Year 11 student Troy said "It was interesting to get a look at the chemical aspects and their real life application, alongside having a good look at all the possible future career paths though chemistry".

Fellow Timboon P-12 student Bridget said the tour "was interesting, to not only learn the theory but to see how the processes of distillation worked and flowed into one another to allow the manipulation and purification of gas for everyday use".
