HERNDON, Va. (AP) _ Beacon Roofing Supply Inc. (BECN) on Thursday reported a fiscal third-quarter loss of $6.7 million, after reporting a profit in the same period a year earlier.

On a per-share basis, the Herndon, Virginia-based company said it had a loss of 18 cents. Earnings, adjusted for one-time gains and costs, came to 93 cents per share.

The results exceeded Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of nine analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for earnings of 61 cents per share.

The roofing materials distributor posted revenue of $1.79 billion in the period, which also beat Street forecasts. Eight analysts surveyed by Zacks expected $1.76 billion.

Beacon Roofing shares have risen roughly 2% since the beginning of the year. In the final minutes of trading on Thursday, shares hit $32.57, a fall of nearly 7% in the last 12 months.
