Becton Dickinson & Co. on Thursday said profit fell in its third quarter, as spinoff- and acquisition-related costs affected the company's bottom line.

The medical-technology company said net income fell to $360 million, or $1.18 a share, from $525 million, or $1.72 a share, in the previous year.

Adjusted for costs such as acquisition-related charges and amortization, per-share earnings were $2.66. Analysts polled by FactSet had been expecting adjusted per-share earnings of $2.55.

The Franklin Lakes, N.J.-based company said revenue for the quarter ended June 30 edged higher to $4.64 billion from $4.61 billion. Analysts had been expecting revenue of $4.5 billion, according to FactSet.
