1208 ET -- Berkshire Hathaway is one of the most mentioned companies in the U.S. across all news items in the past 12 hours, according to Factiva data. On Saturday, Berkshire Hathaway said its operating earnings fell 6% to $10.1 billion in the third quarter from $10.8 billion in the same period a year ago. The company didn't purchase any of its own shares in the third quarter. That compares with a buyback of $345 million in the second quarter and about $2.6 billion in the first quarter. Berkshire's total holdings of cash and equivalents rose $48 billion in the third quarter to a record $325 billion on Sept. 30, up from $277 billion on June 30. Dow Jones & Co. owns Factiva.
